CREATIVE TRAVEL: Journal Your Way to a New You in Morocco

Whether I’m traveling or running errands, I carry a leather Moleskine journal for jotting down notes, dialogue and observations. It’s a journalist’s habit that hasn’t yet yielded to my otherwise digital lifestyle.

But there’s an art to keeping the type of journal that can provide a transformative lens through which you can learn to see yourself with greater awareness.

I recently teamed with career and life design consultant Kendall Dudley to teach a storytelling workshop and when he told me he was leading a 12-day Morocco Journaling & Life Design Adventure (October 8-19, 2014), I was immediately intrigued and eager to share.

But with wildlife galore, adventure sports, ancient culture, stunning landscapes, very few people and environmental protection built into its constitution, Namibia is one of those places that intrepid travelers fall in love with and often never leave. I visited Namibia in 2013 and definitely found myself thinking, “I Could Live Here”.

Ready to go? From self-drive and family safaris to active adventure, photographic tours and bespoke luxury, here are 5 Unforgettable Namibia Adventures to help you GO NOW.

TRANSFORMATIVE TRAVEL: Climb Kilimanjaro For A Cause January 14 - 23, 2012.

“MOUNTAINS FOR WATER” KILIMANJARO CLIMB WITH ELEVATE DESTINATIONS.

Begin the new year with an adventure that will make a difference.

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, the highest peak on the continent of Africa, and the tallest free standing mountain on earth while fundraising to construct a water reservoir for a community in need in Northern Kenya. The seven-day trip from Elevate Destinations starts at machame Gate, ascending via Stella Point, with a nighttime ascent to the summit.

A few spaces remain open for interested climbers who care about how drought is affecting East Africa, most specifically, Northern Kenya.

In 1998-2000, Kenya experienced a two year drought. Ongoing issues have prevented communities, livestock and wild animals from having enough water to drink. Daily, Samburu women have to walk for an hour or more to collect water.  The shortage of water means ill-health and dehydration within the whole community - often leading to the prevalence of Trachoma, a leading cause of painful blindness. Reservoirs are of huge benefit to alleviate damage in times of drought.

The plight of this community is serious, and you can make a tangible difference. This climbing effort will raise funds to construct a rainwater reservoir, which will benefit a local community for decades to come.

Trip Details:
When: January 14 - 23, 2012.
Price: $4,000 a person, double occupancy. Cost includes ground transfers, hotel and tent accommodations, tours, park and rescue fees, some meals and guides. International airfare is not included.
Info: Elevate Destinations, (617) 661-0203

Do You Dream of Africa?

Make your dream a reality in 2011 with Austin-Lehman Adventures.

A vacation in Africa evokes mystery, wonder and above all else, adventure. If you were to ask 100 people what their #1 dream vacation is, a safari in Africa would probably top the list. However, Africa is incredibly diverse and making a decision about where to go and what to do can be an overwhelming challenge.

In 2010 Austin-Lehman Adventures (ALA) director, Dan Austin, spent months studying the available options in Africa.  He traveled to South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Botswana, exploring firsthand the diverse options.  He met with dozens of lodge operators, did countless game drives, visited villages and got to know at least 10 different tribes. He ate Mopane Worms in Windhoek, Wart Hog in Pamwag and Eland in Katima.  He hiked, drove, boated and biked his way across these 5 countries all to understand the best of the best.

Once he had a better understanding of the where, he went to work on the how and who. After talking with a dozen ground operators before leaving the states, he was very pleased to meet face-to-face with 3 of the best in all of Africa.  He spent hours poring over maps and researching accommodations, all with a keen eye on value.  Working hand in hand, the team worked together to come up with the following 3 diverse and exciting itineraries (see below) that highlight some of the best that Africa has to offer.
