FALL IN LOVE WITH ATLANTIC CANADA PRICES DROP UP TO 50 PERCENT AT PEAK FOLIAGE TIME

Haven’t managed to get away this summer yet?  Did you really buy into that “stay-cation” idea?  Or does the news about the economy, the gas crisis and high prices have you worried?  How about a vacation this fall that offers real value?

At the White Point Beach Resort rates also dip in the fall.  Starting September 15, prices for a standard river view room drop to $111 Sunday through Thursday, from the summertime high of $140 – a 20 percent discount.  (The weekend rate is $131.)  After October 19, the rate goes down further to $102 – a 27 percent savings.  (Sunday through Thursday the weekend rate is $111.) Retracing four centuries of settlement, Newfoundland’s Discovery Trail presents a panorama of stunning seascapes, quiet fishing villages and historic sites.  And the fall colors are spectacular: pin cherry and white birch turn bright yellow, sugar maples become rich orange and blueberry bushes explode into crimson.  Majestic icebergs, pods of whales and puffin colonies lure nature lovers.  A network of foot and cart paths lead to fishing ponds, centuries-old lighthouses and isolated out ports.  Visitors can hike from the abandoned community of British Harbour and the lighthouse of Kings Cove trail to the site of a natural fort used during Queen Ann’s War of 1703-13.  One of the most picturesque spots along the Discovery Trail is the charming national heritage community of Trinity.  Here, narrow lanes lead to restored 19th century merchant houses.   There are some 50 architecturally significant buildings in this small town of 350.  Whale watching is a popular activity from the port and twenty-two species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises swim along the coastline.

Zephyr Adventures Drops Prices for Family Tours

Montana-based adventure travel company Zephyr Adventures has dramatically reduced the prices for kids on its Family Adventures, with the price of its Yellowstone multisport family adventure down 38% from last year for kids.

Zephyr Adventures owner Allan Wright says the price drop is not in response to the country’s recent economic worries. “We have been planning this price decrease since the fall,” says Wright. “This is more a long-term plan to make guided family tours more affordable than it is a short-term response to the economy.”

In the world of travel, families have a number of options with a range of prices.  Road trips in the family minivan can be relatively inexpensive, especially if camping is on the agenda.  On the high end, organized guided tours with hotels, meals, activities, and guides can run thousands of dollars for a vacation – per family member.

“We just came to the realization that our family tour offerings were unaffordable for most families,” explains Wright. “And yet the concept of an organized family tour is so fantastic, it didn’t make sense to restrict this to just higher-income families.”

So Zephyr Adventures dropped its prices for kids and, in some cases, for adults.  The five-day Yellowstone Multisport Adventure, priced last year at $1600 per person, is now priced at only $1400 for adults and $1000 for kids staying in the same room.

Zephyr manages to do this by being local and remaining small.  The company is based near its Family Adventure destinations, right outside Yellowstone in Red Lodge, Montana. Zephyr also drastically reduced office expenses by going “virtual,” with all employees working from a home office.

All Zephyr’s family trips include such activities as river rafting, horseback riding, hiking, canoeing, and watching for wildlife.  “Our tours still come loaded with historic National Park lodging, expert guides, great meals, and fun activities,” says Wright.  “Only now, our Yellowstone tours are priced $600 to $1700 less per child than the tours of our competitors.”

Kids are always attended by professional guides and tend to bond with other youth participants within the first hour. Parents are free to participate with their kids or spend time with other adults, going for an extra hike or relaxing with a glass of wine.

Thunderbird Lodge In Canyon De Chelly National Monument Reduces Rates For Winter Season

When the thermostat goes down, so do the room rates at Thunderbird Lodge in Canyon de Chelly National Monument in northeastern Arizona.

The 74-room lodge will reduce its rates for the 2007 – 2008 winter season up to 43 percent off summer-season rates. The lodge will also provide a complimentary continental breakfast, 10 percent off canyon tours and 10 percent off gift shop purchases for overnight visitors who stay on Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights.

The winter rates are in effect from November 1, 2007 to March 1, 2008. Rates per night are $63 for a single room, $69 for a double, $75 for a triple and $81 for a quad. Suites are also available starting at $94.50 for two people. Rates do not include taxes.

Winter temperatures typically range from 40 to 60 degrees with lows averaging around 20 degrees. While the monument does receive some snow, it is generally no more than a few inches.

Thunderbird Lodge is the only lodging facility in Canyon de Chelly National Monument. Rooms are equipped with comfortable beds, full bathrooms and satellite television. The lodge sits on the site of a trading post built in 1896, and its cafeteria-style restaurant is located in the trading post’s original building. The Thunderbird Lodge gift shop and rug room offer some of the region’s finest examples of Native American jewelry, crafts and Navajo rugs as well as other mementos.

Thunderbird Lodge also offers authorized group tours in Canyon de Chelly in six-wheel drive touring vehicles operated by experienced and knowledgeable Navajo guides who explain about the canyon, one of the most sacred as well as historically and culturally significant places in the Navajo Nation. Guests see prime examples of Anasazi ruins, pictographs, petroglyphs and the sites of confrontations between the Navajo and the Spanish, Mexican and American governments.

During the winter, half-day tours leave from Thunderbird Lodge at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. and take visitors into the lower halves of both Canyon de Chelly and Canyon del Muerto and last 3_ hours. Guests typically enjoy an open-air ride, but during inclement weather the vehicles can be covered with clear caps engineered by the lodge’s maintenance staff. With the exception of hiking the White House Ruin trail, travel in the canyons is permitted only with a park ranger or authorized Navajo guide.
