Rough Guides and WorldNomads.com have teamed up to offer an aspiring travel writer the chance to go on assignment with a Rough Guides author to Beijing, China. If you think you have what it takes, check out their 2013 Travel Writing Scholarship, a 12-day trip to Beijing to unearth the stories that make this city the spiritual and political heart of China. The contest offers real on-assignment experience and the fast-track to becoming a published travel writer.

If You Win…
First, you will join Rough Guides writer and mentor, Martin Zatko, on assignment in Beijing to both learn about guide book writing and complete an assignment of your own (including a review of the Forbidden City). Your resulting work will be considered for publication in the next Rough Guide to China.
Next, you’ll join international travel journalist and Beijing local, Kit Gillet, for a three-day adventure into his backyard to explore the hutong alleyways, the burgeoning Chinese art scene and even spend a night camping on the Great Wall!
And, for the last leg of the scholarship, discover the rich food culture of Beijing with three culinary experiences (think tea tasting and dumpling making classes) from Hias Gourmet.
To enter, submit a personal travel essay on one of four provided themes and tell why you should be awarded the scholarship. Head to the World Nomads Scholarship page for more information and to apply.
Entries close April 19, 2013.
As a former teacher, I know first-hand how much travel enhances education. So, I’m thrilled to share this fabulous Send A Teacher Traveling (S.A.T.T.) award program from ExperiencePlus! Bicycle Tours recognizing outstanding U.S. public school teachers and rewarding them with a complimentary bike tour.
Since the program began in 1996 ExperiencePlus! has given away over 20 free bicycle tours across Europe and Latin America. Will you, or your favorite teacher, be the next winner?
Application deadlines and rules:
The 2012 winner was Sally Miller, an elementary art teacher in Pensacola, Florida. She chose the Best of Provence Plus! the Luberon and Aix-en-Provence tour for her prize and blogged about the experience, here..

This Just In:
My favorite small ship cruise line (formerly operating as American Safari Cruises) sets sail in 2013 under a new name, Un-Cruise Adventures, with new ships, new departures in Alaska, Mexico’s Sea of Cortés and the Hawaiian Islands, and an exciting new Pacific Northwest itinerary.
What hasn’t changed is their signature blend of spontaneous flexibility, access to hidden ports, active adventure, and private-yacht feel —a.k.a the Un-Cruise experience.
Are you ready for a family vacation that won’t leave them rolling their eyes at your lame choices? Fear not. It ispossible, if you let the kids do the planning. At least that’s the idea behind Austin Lehman Adventures’ (ALA) new “What Kids Want on a Family Adventure Vacation” call-in focus group webinar headed up by Kasey Austin (daughter of founding director, Dan Austin), the company’s new CEO (Chief Entertainment Officer).
Austin aims to get your kids (ages 7 to 17) on board with adventure planning by giving them their say in every step of the planning and learning what’s important to them on an active family vacation during the Sunday, April 15, 2012 webinar (4 p.m. EST ).
“This is an ongoing research project and dialogue between ALA and its guests, fans and family to constantly improve and enhance the ALA trip experience,” said Austin. “Our summer guests will benefit from the ideas that come out of this focus group discussion.” Kids’ opinions from the webinar will be integrated into ALA family trip programming and orchestrated with guides during ALA’s annual spring training in Billings, MT.
Austin urges kids to sign up early online. The first 25 participants will receive a “certified cool” ALA gift and goody bag. Even better, their family will receive a $250 trip voucher good for any 2012 ALA trip.
To register for the online focus group kids are instructed to go to:https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/571338808. After signing up and confirming they have their parent’s permission to participate, kids will receive a confirmation email containing information about being part of the Webinar.
