PHOTOGRAPHY: An Act of Courage

Why is it that in an age of cutting edge technology and double digit megapixels, when we can make picture perfect images with minimal effort or expertise, that we’re often left feeling like there’s something essential missing in the process?

“When I started in photography I was using my hands to create images and it seemed like overnight digital came along and all of that came to end. I didn’t know it at the time, but I lost something I loved.” says photographer Ian Ruhter in the above video, a heartfelt account of an incredible journey of discovery that inspired him to convert his van into a camera and set off across America in search of social connection.

“Everyone around me had the same camera, with the same signature,” says Ruhter. “I decided I was going to build a camera that no one has.”

For some, like Ruhter, the creative void that digital technology produced was felt so acutely that they make deep radical changes in their professional and personal paths. Others, like me, are newly awakening to a vague dissatisfaction gently simmering beneath the picturesque surface.

It was enrollment in a Seedlight Photography workshop and the resulting barrage of unflattering emotions – shame, vulnerability, envy– it unleashed, that first got me thinking about transformation, creativity and the courage to change.

Opening Our Eyes: A Film That's Ready to Make A Difference

A year ago, the intrepid mother/daughter team, Gail Mooney and Erin Kelly, returned from a 99-day journey around the globe, shooting a film, Opening Our Eyes, about people who are making our world a better place.

At the time they thought that the journey would be the hard part and that the film would be finished by Christmas.  What they didn’t  anticipate was how much work lay ahead. They had more than 150 hours of footage and 5000 still image captures.

After many long months in post-production, and with the help of executive producer, Angel Burns, they had their first “sneak preview” this summer, opening to rave reviews.

View the Opening Our Eyes video trailer.

Their goal for this film is to create awareness and to inspire and motivate others as to what they can do to make a difference.  It’s not just a movie, it’s a movement.  But these passionate women know that for their movie to have an impact and reach a larger audience they need to invest in PR, marketing, and theatrical runs in LA and NY which would qualify it for the Oscar race.

In short, they need to raise money to take the film to the next level, so they have launched a campaign on IndieGoGo.

Is Travel On Your Bucket List? Go Now.

Yesterday I received the sad news that fellow travel writer, Lorry Heverly, “had passed away after a long struggle with cancer.” Those of us lucky enough to have traveled with Lorry remember her passion, sassy smile, and never-say-no zest for living life to its fullest.

Little more than a year ago, I was kayaking with Lorry in Alaska, months before that we were skiing together in New Mexico.

On Lorry’s facebook page this week, friends from Fiji to Fairbanks, Portland to Perth, have shared memories and photographs of Lorry enjoying travel adventures across the globe - each reminding us of the joy and boundless spirit with which she embraced life.

If there’s anyone who turned their bucket list into reality, it’s Lorry Heverly. So it was with a heavy heart that I re-read a blog post, 5 TIPS FOR TAKING YOUR BUCKET LIST FROM DREAM TO REALITY, I’d written weeks ago, but which published the same day I’d learned of Lorry’s passing.

Is travel on your bucket list? In honor of Lorry and those like her who inspire us to embrace life fully, go now. Don’t postpone those dreams for a day that may come too late.

The Internal Traveler

I love helping people learn the ins and outs of travel, but I’ve always wanted to create a blog that covers a wider range of topics, and is relevant to individuals interested in taking the internal journey to a happier, bigger, better, and richer, life of meaning.

So I’ve decided to start a new series, THE INTERNAL TRAVELER, featuring topics like happiness, personal growth, and relationships, because no matter how far we travel, we take ourselves along for the journey.

This is the first in that series and I’d love it if you’d use the comment box below to share your thoughts, ideas and suggestions as we travel down this path together. Better yet, if you have wisdom, insights and experiences you’d like to share, drop me an email —I’d love to have you involved!
