Hotwire Reveals Shoulder Season Travel Secrets

Just back from your summer vacation, but feel ready for another one? According to Hotwire.com®, a leading discount travel site, consumers can get the best bang for their travel dollars during the off-peak shoulder season when travel demand typically declines and the travel industry is trying to fill empty rooms, flights and cars. Shoulder season runs from September through November, between the peak summer season and winter holidays, when the weather is still good and travelers can score real bargains.

“Shoulder season is a great time to beat the crowds and high rates at many popular destinations,” says Clem Bason, vice president and travel expert at Hotwire®, a leading discount travel site. “There’s no need for travelers to spend half their vacation waiting in line, and pay high season rates. Traveling during shoulder season is a relaxing and great way to stretch your vacation dollars. Take a getaway this Fall before prices start rising towards the holidays.”

For consumers wanting to book a shoulder season escape, Bason offers the following tips:

-          Enjoy warm weather destinations. Resort destinations, especially those focused on families, generally see slower demand just after the summer season. Great deals can be found in Orlando, Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean. Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Phoenix can also be good.

-          Try mid-sized cities.  The biggest cities will be hosting conventions and it may be harder to score a deal when business travelers are in town.  But mid-sized gems like Dallas, Orlando and Denver have a lot to offer.  Check out the Hotwire Travel Value Index for a list of some mid-sized cities that are a great value year-round.

-          Check out markets with an excess of new hotels. Cities like Washington DC, Las Vegas and San Diego are expected to remain inexpensive for the remainder of 2008. Fewer conventions are planned in these markets during the coming months and there are empty rooms to fill in many of the new hotels.

-          Hit the road. After Labor Day, car rental rates typically fall because companies have excess summer inventory to unload. In fact, car rental rates on Hotwire.com are as low as $13.95 a day.

When More Is Actually Less; Cleveland Multi-Attraction Pass Offers Travelers Significant Discounts

Taking a trip to Cleveland just became even easier and more affordable. With the advent of the Cleveland Plus Pass, visitors can buy one ticket that gives them access to ten (10) major attractions at a savings of at least 30%, often even more.

Now visitors can purchase a pass good for two (2), three (3) or five (5) days. The “time” on the card begins when the Cleveland Plus Pass’ barcode is scanned at any participating location. Once the pass is activated, cardholders are able to experience as many of the featured gardens, museums, zoos and other destinations as their time and personal interests allow. “It’s definitely a deal,” says Emilie Poua, Director of Arts & Cultural Tourism for Positively Cleveland. “The cost for a single adult to visit all ten attractions at full price would be $64 … with a Pass it’s anywhere from $24.95 for the two-day option to $49.95 for the five-day ticket.”

The Cleveland Plus Pass is good for general admission to the Children’s Museum of Cleveland, Cleveland Botanical Garden, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, The Holden Arboretum, Lake Metroparks Farmpark, Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland and Western Reserve Historical Society. The multi-attraction discount will offer sightseers even more value with additional special savings on merchandise, meals and more. For example, from October 19, 2008 - January 18, 2009, Cleveland Plus Passholders will receive $4 off admission to the blockbuster exhibit Artistic Luxury: Faberge Tiffany Lalique.

The Cleveland Plus Pass can be purchased at Positively Cleveland’s Visitors Center downtown Cleveland (The Higbee Building, 100 Public Square, Suite 100, Cleveland, OH) or online at http://www.positivelycleveland.com/pluspass. “We’re excited about the possibilities of this program and hope in the future to have the pass available for sale in other locations and as a part of hotel packages,” says Tamera Lash Brown, Positively Cleveland’s VP of Marketing.
The Cleveland Plus Pass was created with OmniTicket Network, whose list of clients includes convention and visitors bureaus and major theme parks. The program is generously funded by Cuyahoga County residents through Cuyahoga Arts and Culture (CAC).

Mamma Mia! Here's a Deal You Can't Resist - 25% Savings To Santorini This Fall

Greece is on movie screens all over the country these days.  And here’s a deal for October at the iconic island of Santorini.

Astra, one of the leading boutique properties in Santorini – that iconic Greek island all over movie screens this summer and glimpsed in Mamma Mia* – is offering a fall special for the first time ever.  October 1 -  31, Astra is providing guests who stay for three nights, a fourth night free – a 25 percent savings off the regular rates. The “Fall in Love at Astra” package starts at about $1,100 and includes a traditional Greek breakfast daily, champagne and chocolates served at sunset on the second day, and taxes – a savings of about $360.

High up on a cliff overlooking the Aegean, offering a bird’s eye view of the 3,600-year-old caldera, Astra provides genuine Greek hospitality in a setting of simple elegance.  Wildflower-filled paths and whitewashed staircases lead to the cozy reception area filled with books and artwork.  The signature colors of the Cyclades are reflected in the sparkling infinity pool hanging 1000 feet above the turquoise sea and the roomy day beds draped in white linen.  Consistently rated one of the top three on the island, this boutique hotel has a loyal following with guests returning year after year.

In October, as chilly winds begin to blast the U.S., a refreshingly cool breeze finally arrives on the beautiful Cycladic island of Santorini, where average temperatures hover around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.  With the temperate weather and no summer crowds, visitors can relax in luxurious accommodations at a substantial savings.

Each of the 28 spacious suites and rooms are decorated in traditional island style with works by local artists.  The complex has 16 domed-ceiling apartments and 12 luxurious suites – eight with private plunge pools or outdoor Jacuzzis.  A day spa offers a full range of massages and facials.  Opened this year, Astra’s restaurant serves delicious fresh fish and Santorinian specialties under the stars.

The peaceful village of Imerovigli sits at the highest point on the rim of the caldera.  Quaint white-cube houses are carved into the rocky cliff or line narrow cobblestone streets.  Astra looks directly across to the towering rock of Skaros, with ruins of a 13th century castle built during the Venetian occupation which stood unconquered for 600 years.  .

While it is hard for guests to pull themselves away from the view and the pool at Astra, Santorini offers other pleasures.  There are beaches, archaeological sites, charming medieval villages and a pulsating nightlife.

Astra’s special offer is good through October 31, depending on availability.  The rate for a standard apartment is about $367 or €250 and includes: a bottle of Santorini wine upon arrival, daily maid service and a traditional Greek breakfast of yoghurt and fruit, eggs, ham, cheese – served on the guest’s private balcony.  The “Fall in Love at Astra” fall package represents a savings of about $360 – and means the daily room rate goes down to $275.  A superior apartment is about $440 or €300, and a two-bedroom apartment for four people is $484 or €330.   Suites range in price from $587 to $939 (€400 to €640.)  Free high-speed Internet access is in all rooms and suites.

Rates for the suites include: a bottle of premium Santorini wine and flowers upon arrival, full continental American breakfast on your balcony, twice-daily maid service, newspapers, bathrobes, slippers and additional luxury amenities.  All rates based on single or double occupancy and taxes are included.

For more information about Astra Apartments and Suites, go to www.astra-apartments.com or www.astra.gr.  For reservations, visit the website or call: 011-30-2286-2-47-65.

* While most of Mamma Mia was shot in the Sporades Islands of Skiathos and Skopelos, Grecophiles know that several iconic views were really Santorini.
