Good news train travelers, the Grand Canyon Railway (GCR) is reducing its rates on select packages July 22 through Aug. 13, 2011.

The Grand Canyon Railway offers a variety of multi-night packages that include train travel to and from Grand Canyon National Park, accommodations and some meals.

The train trip from Williams to Grand Canyon National Park takes approximately two hours and 15 minutes and runs 65 miles through ponderosa pine forests and scenic desert landscapes. The train offers four classes of service – coach, first class, observation dome and luxury parlor.

The prices quoted below are for coach class travel, are valid July 22 through Aug. 13, 2011 and are per couple based on double occupancy in a standard room at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel (GCRH) in Williams, Ariz. Rates do not include taxes or the park entrance fee. Upgrades to seats in first class, observation dome and luxury parlor are available. Rates for children ages two through 15 staying in the same room are available as well.

The Grand Canyon Railway Hotel was designed to resemble the historic Fray Marcos Hotel and Williams Depot structures that stand nearby. The hotel is comprised of 199 standard rooms, 87 deluxe rooms, 10 suites and one luxury suite – the Rail Baron Suite – as well as two spacious meeting rooms available for wedding receptions, seminars and other functions; a large courtyard with barbecue and wet bar; a game room for children; a large enclosed crescent-shaped pool and hot tub and an exercise room.

I've been to the Grand Canyon a few times and I dont see how it would be worthwhile to take a train. Its not as if you can look up or out at the canyon itself. Everything worth seeing is always down.... unless you're in the canyon, then of course looking up is the name of the game. One Historic train I have ridden and is definitely worth checking out is the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge railway. The train is an old steam engine from the 1800s, and the whole trip is filled with sites that are enjoyable no matter where you sit on the train.
